NI Kore - The Universal Sound Platform
Chapter 3 - Feel The Software
Imagine being able to touch your software like you
can your hardware...
Now You Can: KORE
Do you use a mouse to control all your software instruments and effects?
Are you often constrained by the limitations and low resolution of conventional
MIDI controllers? Is the assigning of parameters often awkward and inflexible?
Is there a lack of parameter synchronisation and no concise overview
of which parameter is assigned to which control?
The Solution: A Perfect Fusion of Software and Hardware

The perfect software and hardware system
KORE combines software and hardware to form a single,
integrated system. Gone are the days of complicated and often not entirely
compatible combinations of MIDI controllers and sequencers or live set-ups.
The KORE controller delivers manual control for all your Audio Unit
and VST plug-ins. Use the KORE hardware to adjust all automatable parameters
and benefit from a real analog feel. The result: KORE turns your software
instruments into hardware units.

Advanced features, such as the touch-sensitive knobs,
high-resolution protocol, bi-directional communication, audio and MIDI
interface and context-specific display all contribute to placing this
controller in a league of its own.
Total Access with Controller Pages
The number of parameters that can be assigned to the KORE interface
is of course not limited to the eight buttons and knobs. Additional
'controller pages', each with eight knobs and buttons, can be stepped
through easily, ensuring that all the necessary parameters can be accessed.
Intuitve Assignments
All of your Audio Unit and VST plug-in parameters that have automation
IDs* can be controlled by KORE. Assigning a particular parameter to
one of KORE's control elements is easy. Simply activate "Assign", click
on the parameter you need and then touch the control element on the
hardware that you wish to assign it to and that's it.
Assign all the most important parameters to the first controller pages
and save it all for quick access at a future date. Again, a process
that has already been completed for the instruments and effects in NI
KOMPLETE 3 and NI KOMPLETE SOUND 2. (See "Easy Access" below).

Assign controls by 'touching' them
With KORE you can even create ingenious multiple assignments.
For example, assign a KoreSound's filter cut-off, q-slope and resonance
parameters, each with differing control ranges, all to a single control
element. You can even designate the parameters to alter their respective
values in opposite directions to one another impossible with
other controllers.
When using KORE in a sequencer, the parameters included in the first
8 controller pages (a maximum of 128 parameters) can be recorded in
a sequencer's automation track.
In contrast to other controllers, KORE saves assignments per preset
or 'KoreSound' as opposed to globally per instrument or effect. The
great advantage of this approach is that different parameters can be
assigned, saved and instantly recalled for each individual KoreSound
a feature that is unique to KORE.
"Easy Access" with KOMPLETE 3
The combination of KORE and NI KOMPLETE 3 makes the production process
particularly intuitive and convenient. The fact that NI KOMPLETE 3 has
been pre-configured for use with KORE makes the pair an ideal combination.

The various instruments' and effects' most important
parameters have been grouped together on two "Easy Access Pages" per
KoreSound - accessible via both hardware and software interfaces.
This means that you will always find the controls for say "sound source",
"modulation", "resonance" and "effect" in the same place, regardless
of which plug-in you are currently using**. This standardization makes
using all the different sound generators REAKTOR alone comes
with 50 default library instruments far simpler.
High Resolution - Analogue Feel
The KORE system delivers a stunningly realistic 'analog feel'. As the
controller uses incremental rather than absolute values, annoyingly
large 'value jumps' as is the case with MIDI controllers are a thing
of the past. As opposed to other incremental dials, the knobs on the
KORE controller have 500 steps per revolution thus delivering an incredibly
high resolution. The protocol is not restricted to the customary 127
steps MIDI resolution but allows the high resolution parameter values
to be communicated directly between hardware and software via USB 2.0.
Software and Hardware Interaction
The touch-sensitive, back-lit knobs of the KORE controller combined
with the bi-directional communication and context-specific display ensure
a seamless interaction between the system's software and hardware components.
Touch one of the hardware's knobs and its assigned parameter appears
in the hardware display and is simultaneously highlighted in the software
interface.

The displays shows the currently active parameter

Click an element in the software interface and the
corresponding knob on the controller immediately lights up. Any parameter
adjustments made appear instantly on both the software interface and
hardware display guaranteeing a perfect overview of what is going on
the entire time.
Complete Control
The KORE controller not only enables the manual adjustment of parameters
but almost complete remote control of the entire KORE software. Use
the KORE controller to switch from one channel to the next; skip through
the controller pages; browse through your KoreSounds, performances,
performance presets, plug-ins or MIDI files and adjust a KoreSound's
settings.

Display examples
And the detailed 64x128 pixel controller display delivers
a complete overview, even in poor light, allowing you to operate nearly
everything without even having to look at your computer screen.

Navigation controls
Navigation buttons, a jog wheel and six menu buttons
make using the controller a quick and easy affair. The transport controls
allow, for example, MIDI files that have been embedded in KoreSounds
to be played or the internal clock to be activated in stand-alone mode
and drum loops triggered.
Integrated Audio and MIDI Interface

Connections (Click image to enlarge...)
KORE also sports an integrated, high-end audio interface,
making KORE an all-in-one solution. Its two inputs, four outputs (two
line out and one stereo headphone out), MIDI in/out, inputs for two
foot pedals and one expression pedal as well as its USB 2.0 interface
equip you for instant action.
Naturally, the KORE controllers audio interface can also be deactivated
should you wish to use an interface with multiple inputs and outputs.
Construction, Size, Weight...
- Rugged aluminium casing
- Size: 300 x 183 x 35 mm
- Weight: 1635g
- Power supply via USB 2.0 Bus
* KORE allows the adjustment of parameters for Audio
Unit and VST plug-ins that support host automation.
** "Easy Access Pages" have been pre-assigned for most of the KOMPLETE
3 instruments and effects. As far as KONTAKT 2 and BATTERY 2 are concerned,
only a few parameters, or in some cases none at all, have been assigned
to the "Easy Access Pages". This is due to the fact that these products
either have freely definable automation IDs or do not transfer IDs for
all parameters. ELEKTRIK PIANO cannot be controlled remotely via KORE
as ELEKTRIK PIANO only supports one MIDI controller automation and no
host automation.
