Ruff n' Tumble

London based production team Ruff n' Tumble have been in the business for a long time writing r 'n b and dance hits. Arbiter's Bryan Borcherds headed down to their main writing studio to find out what they use to produce the number one singles...

Dave Longmore and Sam Junior Bromfield have tried almost every software package available but have now decided to use only their favourites.

Junior insists on Steinberg's Hypersonic - "You always find the sound that you are looking for. No matter what sound the client has originally used, Hypersonic has it. The first thing that we noticed was actually how light it was on CPU power - we expected it to be really heavy." He adds - "I also like the quick search feature... just type it in and the patch is ready to load!".

Dave has his favourite too - "Reaktor, definitely. The presets are great and there are many one-button sounds, I love the effects and it sounds expensive!".

On sequencers they have their own preferences: Dave uses Nuendo and Junior Cubase SX3 - "Nuendo is the centre of everything" says Dave... "People come in with all these projects and I can load them all into Nuendo, no problem". Junior adds - "I've used Pro Tools but still stay with Cubase SX - it works, it's stable, and I find it easy to use. The dummy plug-in is very useful too".

So what else then? "NI Pro 53 - basses all day long, and for the synth stringy sound. A classic". "And Groove Agent!" adds Dave, "I love it. I use the mute button a lot, find a nice beat and mute parts, say, the hi hat, or use just the kick, for example". "And don't forget about the fills, that's what I like about it"

Junior says - "HALion is brilliant for setting up drums too, to load up my favourite samples and get a groove going".

They also use Steinberg D'cota "...which has definitely added to the palette for odd sounds" and Steinberg Xphraze - "Xphraze is lovely for arpeggiated rhythms or just to add layers - it's cheeky!"

Steinberg's Virtual Guitarist also features in many of their songs. "It's great, it sounds real and doesn't steal your girlfriend!'" enthuses Junior, "...a very good creative tool and we tend to use it a lot".

For vocals Dave recommends Celemony's Melodyne - "We've used Melodyne for a while now and it is gorgeous. Last week I went to Celemony's website and watched the demo that's there and realised how much more it can do - brilliant! The only auto-tune software I'd recommend."

Dave has just purchased the Echo Indigo I/O soundcard for his new laptop. "It looks like the one to do the job, and well!" he says confidently.

"We've also noticed the ID Controller by WK-Audio - it looks like the 'bees knees'. What I like too is that there is an extra panel that is not yet in use but to be implemented to add new control. The perfect match for Nuendo."

Ruff 'n Tumble are currently working with a few selected and respected artists, and you'll be sure to hear even more of their hits on the radio in the future.
