Neil Wilkes - Opus Productions

Opus Productions is an award winning production company based in West London. They specialise in high quality audio production - from CD mastering to high resolution multi-channel DVD authoring - and operate from a studio based around Steinberg Nuendo and WaveLab. Arbiter Music Technology's Bryan Borcherds and Sam Wetmore spoke to their Director Neil Wilkes...

Why Nuendo?

"Simple. When setting up Opus we wanted the best software we could get. At the beginning we had Nuendo 1.01. Even then it performed tasks that no other software on the market was capable of. Since then as we have grown and developed, our Nuendo system has grown and developed with us. We now use the latest Nuendo 2.2 and are looking forward to its continuing evolution.

The real beauty of the system is its scalability - with the core software installed, we just add the hardware as required and the Nuendo hardware is every bit as good as the software. There really is no other software available we would consider."

Ease of use

"For us, the real beauty of the Nuendo / WaveLab combination is the simplicity of workflow. It really doesn't matter what the intended media is, Nuendo handles everything right off the same timeline - no switching between projects for CD and DVD - with the Dolby Digital and DTS encoders we can simply change the export settings and everything comes off the same mixes which is a real bonus when you have to produce several different versions of everything. I just set up the Surround mix how I want it, and dump that down to 24 bit split files ready for the DVD-Audio authoring, and when that is done I can drop the Dolby Digital & DTS versions right away with no resets, reboots or changes needed. Stereo is a little trickier. I have to go to the effort of adding in an extra plug to the mix buss, and then rebalance the mix for 2 channels as opposed to 6 - but it's not exactly rocket science!

Everything I need is built right in, and I can't think of any other package that could give me that amount of flexibility. And that is worth its weight in Gold to me."

Surround Options

"We work mainly in Surround these days - DVD is really starting to dominate the market and it is only a matter of time before DVD-Audio becomes commonplace - so the surround capabilities in Nuendo are a serious boon. If you've not yet worked in surround it's hard to explain how addictive it gets, and having the surround functionality every step of the way is so useful I cannot imagine it ever being any other way."

"Let me try to explain: Whatever I am working on, the routing is always there and so flexible - I can start with a 5.1 track

coming straight into the project if needed, so if I am doing a mastering job, for example, and the source material is on a digital 8-track tape, I can either extract it in digitally or run it in real-time straight to a 5.1 input track. No messing around with 6 mono files and then routing them after the fact. It's just there - right from the outset. And when mixing from multitracks, the possibilities become endless. I can have, say, 12 drum tracks all in mono files and set up not only stereo subgroups, but LRC/Quad or even 5.1 - up to 10.2 is possible, but I've never yet had to go up there. And not only with the group tracks, but FX tracks too. It is so liberating being able to slot in a surround reverb on it's own 5.0 buss, and not need to even think about having to pan everything through stereo groups and fudge it. The control is there immediately. Another great little trick is to set up a standard stereo, or even an LRC group - buss all the drums to that, and slot in a surround panner afterwards which gives full control over the front speaker imaging and the option to use the surrounds for added ambience.

And when you add in the Surround Bundle plugins, having just a single insert taking care of all the EQ duties instead of using 3 stereo ones with all the inherent phasing problems that produces, plus being able to split off the LFE track in a way that closely emulates the way consumer systems Bass Management works - and it cuts the production time in half enabling me to do twice as much plus keeping the costs reasonable for our clients. I could go on about this all day it's so impressive!"

CD Mastering & Multi-channel Authoring

"Nothing simpler. Just open up WaveLab, and again I have everything I need right at my fingertips. Spectral analysis, final adjustments, assembling playlists & creating the final masters ready for the replication plant right down to the cue sheets & reports that the factory needs. All there, all available instantly with no messing."

Any format you like…

"I guess that I can summarize everything really easily. Given the combination of tools in Nuendo, whatever format you require, we can provide it. CD mastering, DVD-Audio, Audio for DVD-Video, Surround CD's (for those who want a surround release, but not the hassle of a full DVD project - look no further!) even multi-channel streaming for your website. If it is highest possible quality that you need, we have a package for you..."
