After having spent several years at Videosonics as a dubbing
mixer Tim Alban recently set up Clarity Post in Soho, London
together with Richard Davey, also ex-Videosonics. Tim realised
that you no longer needed to spend hundreds of thousands of
pounds on hardware based equipment as the combination of today's
powerful computers and intuitive software can often exceed what
traditional hardware systems can offer.
The first time Tim saw Steinberg's Nuendo was in October 2002
and in this relatively short time - in addition to setting up
Clarity Post with three Nuendo systems - he has already completed
one feature film and a major new Channel 4 television series.
Tim is currently using Nuendo on Kevin MacDonald's latest project
"Touching The Void". A lot has been achieved in only
a few months at Clarity Post and the key is perhaps in Tim's
comments: "We threw ourselves right in at the deep end
with the system to meet project deadlines and apart from some
hardware issues at the beginning operationally we got on with
Nuendo very well. In a lot of ways we can now work quicker than
we used to with our previous systems." And when asked about
stability Tim had two words to say, "Very good."
When quizzed on Nuendo's most positive sides, Tim replied,
"The ability to handle vast amounts of material! We're
working with 120 tracks on our current project and also having
onboard mixing allows us to increase the level of preparation
before we enter the dub, helping to make the whole process more
efficient." On scalability Tim commented, "You can
also set up very easily to do whatever you want in terms of
project size from small job right up to large scale projects."

Clarity Post also make use of Nuendo on a laptop system for
ultimate portability and flexibility, including video capture
through a Directors Cut capture card. This allows for the capture
of composite video and two channels of audio direct to the laptop
providing a PAL DV AVI file.
As well as using Nuendo software on a custom built PC, Clarity
Post also use a Nuendo 96/52 PCI card linked to Apogee AD-16
and DA-16 converters via ADAT lightpipes, as well as Apogee's
Mini-Me portable mic pre-amp and converter unit plus RME's MADI
interface, which allows 56 channels of audio from Nuendo to
DFC.
