The legendary Jim Chapin
performed a Masterclass in London hosted by Mike Dolbear.
Jim celebrates his 85th birthday this year, his passionate
enthusiasm and energy for passing on traditional techniques
like the Moeller Method is evangelical and can only be
respected.
Serving up his two hour Masterclass to an exclusive
attendance of thirty people, he educated them on the basic
methods of the Moeller technique underlined with his stories
from jazz greats Buddy Rich, Ed Soph, Elvin Jones, Joe
Morello, Max Roach and more - a history lesson in jazz
drumming thrown in for good measure from actual
experience.

The legendary Jim Chapin
Jim was overwhelmed by the
standard shown by these students and particularly touched to
see young drummers as young as 16 years old attend the
class. He managed to charm his audience with his humbling
personality and they were mesmerised and transfixed by the
traditional techniques taught through the magic hands of
this grand master.

Traditional techniques taught through the
magic hands of this grand master
Noticeably, Jim was using a
SABIAN 14" Quiet Tone, a practice pad designed for tabletop
or to be placed over a snare drum. In this instance, he
placed it on his snare drum whilst he demonstrated his
rudiments and technique, this reduced the snare response
quite significantly - ideal for quite practice. This pad is
impressive and has excellent stick response even the grace
and ghost notes are clearly audible. The most valuable
quality is that it retains the feel of the drum - a definite
recommendation for beginners, intermediate and advanced
drummers.

His audience mesmerised and transfixed...
Respectfully at an age where
most would put their feet up, Jim Chapin continues to
inspire many drummers, never tires of sharing information
and firmly takes ownership of the responsibility for passing
on the baton of valuable information with an undying passion
- an admiral quality.
