Gilson Lavis has had
a healthy working relationship with celebrity and music icon
Jools Holland since the days of Squeeze. I
caught up with him at BBC Shepherds Bush recording a TV
special for the X'mas festive season. Jools Holland and R
& B Orchestra are currently on tour and I had to ask him
how does he sychronise a TV show in a middle of a tour.
Gilson replies "All of us got a tape of the songs and we
learn them on tour, there is a short rehearsal on the day of
the show and we dive into recording the programme and that's
it". It's all professional busking at the highest level and
I was so impressed with the show and the level of
professionalism by Gilson and the band - an example to
behold.
He is a real trooper and I also have to say that Gilson
Lavis is one of the most sartorially elegant drummers I've
found in the business - more importantly, he is one of the
nicest people you ever wish to meet.
Please make welcome Neil Payne, new drummer for
Texas who I met at the show. The band make a welcome
return with Charlene Spiteri adding her dulcet tones
to songs from the band's forthcoming album and one of their
classics 'Sway'.
Other artists who highlighted 'Hootenanny 2004' were
Lulu, Desmond Dekker, Paul Rodgers,
Candi Staton, Shane McGowan, Sam Brown,
James Dean Bradfield, Sugarbabes, Junior
Senior, Texas and Primal Scream.
All in all, those who tuned in to the 'Hootennanny' on New
Years' Eve had a fabulous run up to 2004!
